Welcome back to my series on why planning is my therapy. In my previous post, I covered how planning helps me be myself, reduces the amount of stress in my life, gives me a sense of accomplishment, and unleashes my creative side. In this post, I’d like to continue that discussion and talk about a few more ways that planning acts like my therapy. Hopefully, these apply to you too and will fuel your love of planning in way that is unique to you and that so many other people might not understand.
Diary and Memory Keepsake
Every night before bed, I open up my planner and write down everything I did that day. Depending on the planner that I have open (and I have many!), I’ll write down what I had for dinner, what I did at work, what I talked to my friends about, exciting adventures like vacations and movie nights, or routine things like household chores. In this way, my planner turns into my diary. I love writing down everything I did and then looking back several months later. I get to remember and relive not only the special occasions, but also everyday activities that I may have forgotten. Now, I have six Erin Condren Life Planners, three Happy Planner life planners, and four EC and HP teacher planners.
Fun Hands-On Activity
Planning is fun! This is perhaps my main reason for planning. To me, there’s no better way to unwind after a long day than to open up a planner, grab a favorite pen and a brand-new sticker sheet, and dive into my planner so I can plan the night away. Then after a good night’s sleep, I open up the planner and get back to it before heading out the door for work. It sets me up for a happy day at school and helps me feel peaceful and calm before bed for a great night sleep. Planning brings excitement into my life, leaving no room for self-doubt or negativity.
Keeps My Mind Sharp
Planning stimulates my mind in so many ways. When I write in my planner, I am exercising my communication skills by breaking complex ideas and activities into their simple parts. Decorating with colorful stickers and drawings keeps my eye-hand coordination sharp, builds dexterity in my wrists and fingers, and further develops the right side of my brain. Tracking meals, budgets, and exercise routines improves the analytical, left side of my brain. Looking back at old memories helps to improve my memory recall. Because of all these reasons, planning will help keep my mind healthy and sharp long into old age.
